Render trailing whitespace

Editing · 1 min read

Extra spaces left hanging at the end of a line are made visible.

When you would want it

They are invisible by definition, they show up as changes in every review, and some languages care about them.

Where to find it

  • All Features → Render trailing whitespace
  • Turn on or off
  • Settings

What you get out of it

  • Diffs stop containing invisible space changes nobody meant to make.
  • Whitespace-sensitive formats stop hiding their fragility.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Turn it on in Editing settings - off by default, since it is noise while you are not hunting.
  2. Spaces and tabs stranded at line ends render as faint marks.
  3. Clean them up by hand, or let format-on-save trim them from then on.

Why this beats the usual way

Configured into most editors globally, visible whitespace becomes permanent noise. As an off-by-default lens for when you care, it is a tool, not a wallpaper.
