Branch switcher
Git · 1 min read
Work on a separate copy of the project, so you can try something without disturbing the version that works.
When you would want it
It is the safe way to attempt anything risky. If it goes badly you throw the copy away and nothing else was touched.
Where to find it
- All Features → Branch switcher
- Switch branch
- Create a branch
- Turn on or off
- Settings
What you get out of it
- Experiments live on branches instead of in your main working tree.
- Branch creation is cheap enough that 'try it' always wins over 'risk it here'.
How to use it, step by step
- Click the branch name in the bottom-left corner.
- Pick another branch to switch to, or type a name to create one.
- Git - Checkout Branch and Git - Create Branch do the same from the menu.
Why this beats the usual way
Branching from the command line is fine until the fifth context switch of the day. Hiding the paperwork does not change the tool - the repo stays ordinary git - but it makes the safe path the easy path.
