Blame
Git · 1 min read
Shows who last changed each line, and which save it came from.
When you would want it
The name is unfriendly and the feature is not: it is how you find the person or the note that explains why a line is the way it is.
Where to find it
- All Features → Blame
- Blame this line
- Turn on or off
- Settings
What you get out of it
- Reading code becomes reading intent: who added it, and what they said they were doing.
- On demand by default - the information is there without the constant noise.
How to use it, step by step
- Put the cursor on a line and run Git - Blame This Line.
- It answers with the author, the commit, and the commit message.
- Uncommitted lines say so plainly instead of inventing a ghost commit.
- Turn the setting on to get a faint per-line note everywhere instead.
Why this beats the usual way
Grepping git log manually takes a minute per question. Blame makes it one click - and the setting for per-line notes is opt-in, respecting people who do not want permanent annotations.
