Finding your way
Outline
Finding your way · 1 min read
A list of everything in the file you are looking at - its functions, classes, and sections.
When you would want it
It is the table of contents for a file, and the fastest way to jump around inside a long one.
Where to find it
- All Features → Outline
- Go to a line
- Next editor
- Previous editor
- Next change
- Previous change
- Turn on or off
- Settings
What you get out of it
- Every file gets a table of contents generated from its real structure.
- Jumping inside a long file replaces scrolling entirely.
How to use it, step by step
- On by default - open the Structure popup from the activity bar.
- The current file's functions, classes and sections draw as a tree.
- Click any entry to jump straight to its line.
- Swap to the project tab for the same view across the whole codebase.
Why this beats the usual way
A scrollbar presumes you remember where things are; an outline presumes nothing. Tree view with jump-on-click turns 'long file' from a hazard into a non-issue.
