Gutter diff decorations
Git · 1 min read
Little coloured marks in the left margin show which lines you have changed since you last saved them into your project's history.
When you would want it
It answers 'what have I actually touched here' without opening anything or comparing anything.
Where to find it
- All Features → Gutter diff decorations
- Turn on or off
- Settings
What you get out of it
- You always know at a glance what you have touched since the last commit.
- Per-change undo means cleaning up a mess without touching good edits.
How to use it, step by step
- On by default - the left margin of the editor shows your uncommitted changes.
- Green is added, blue is changed, a small triangle marks a deletion.
- Click a mark to see the previous content and to undo just that change.
Why this beats the usual way
Diff tools that require opening a separate view hide the answer behind an action. Inline marks answer 'what did I change' continuously, in the same view where you are changing things.
