Finding your way
Fuzzy file open
Finding your way · 1 min read
Open any file by typing a few letters of its name. You do not have to get them right, or in order.
When you would want it
Clicking through folders to find a file you already know the name of is the slowest thing in any editor.
Where to find it
- All Features → Fuzzy file open
- Go to a file
- Turn on or off
- Settings
- Keyboard → Ctrl/Cmd+P
What you get out of it
- The tree becomes somewhere you browse, not somewhere you hunt.
- Misspellings still find the file - 'ushnd' finds 'useHandler.ts'.
- Recent files rank higher, so 'the one I just had open' is usually result one.
How to use it, step by step
- Press Ctrl+P.
- Type two or three letters of the file's name - order does not matter.
- Arrow through the ranked results; the path is shown so similarly named files are easy to tell apart.
- Press Enter to open the highlighted file.
Why this beats the usual way
This used to be the headline feature of a paid IDE. Here it is built in from the first launch, with no indexing pause on big projects - the ranking runs off the file tree you already have.
Shortcut
