Format on save

Formatting · 1 min read

Every time you save, the file gets tidied first.

When you would want it

So you never think about it again. Code that is formatted on every save is never messy, and nobody has to remember a shortcut.

Where to find it

  • All Features → Format on save
  • Turn on or off
  • Settings
  • Keyboard → Ctrl/Cmd+S

What you get out of it

  • Your files never drift out of house style - nobody has to remember anything.
  • Diffs stay about your change, not about whitespace.
  • If a formatter cannot handle the language, the save proceeds untouched rather than mangling the file.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Turn it on in Formatting settings - it is off by default, so saves never rewrite your file uninvited.
  2. Open any file and edit it as usual.
  3. Save with Ctrl+S.
  4. The formatter tidies the file first; then the save lands.
  5. Prefer to tidy manually? Press Shift+Alt+F any time.

Why this beats the usual way

Zero install is the difference. Most setups need a formatter extension, a config file, and a settings toggle before the first save formats anything. In Agentfly the formatter is built in, defers to a language server when one exists, and formats on save once you opt in.
